Mum won’t let Bingo have pavlova, so the kids find a way by playing a cheeky game of Café in the kitchen.

But as Bluey waits on her customer Bingo, Dad inserts himself in their game as a chef who can’t speak English and can’t get Bingo’s order of pavlova quite right.

When Bluey has no choice but to fire him, Dad sets up his own shop next door and forces Bingo to choose between pavlova and edamame beans.

Bingo doesn’t want to hurt Dad’s feelings, but she can’t resist the pavlova. But after eating the whole slice, she tries an edamame bean of her own free will… and it tastes pretty good!

Episode Recap

Warning Spoilers!

Out on the deck, Bandit and Chilli are playing a boardgame. Bingo runs up and asks for a slice of the pavlova that's in the fridge. Chilli tells Bingo to eat some of the edamame that Bluey is munching on - and when she refuses, Chilli tells her that she must not be that hungry. This gives Bluey an idea.

Bluey unsubtly invites Bingo to play Café with her. Chilli sends Bandit to go deal with the kids, while she considers her next move.

In the kitchen, Bluey sets up a cafe on the kitchen counter. Bingo, playing her customer, orders the only thing on the menu (a slice of pavlova, of course). But when Bluey goes to retrieve it, she finds Bandit guarding the fridge. Wearing a toque, apron, and drawn-on moustache, and armed with a ladle and frying pan, he has appointed himself the café's cook - and he only speaks broken French.

Bluey attempts to communicate by the time-honoured technique of talking slower and louder. Bandit, in turn, serves up a fridge magnet, and then a plate of edamame.

Bluey resorts to pointing. Bandit serves up a crumb of pavlova. She sends him back for a bigger piece, and this time, he delivers. And then, smothers it in tomato sauce when Bingo is about to dig in.

That's the final straw - Bandit is fired. By the time Bluey has fetched the pavlova from the fridge, he has already set up a rival café, serving edamame. He manages to convince Bingo that they should have a cook-off.

So the competition begins. Bluey dresses up the pavlova with additional fruit and sprinkles. Bandit, meanwhile, shells the edamame with Bingo's help. He shows her that they can be shot a fair distance by squeezing them out of their pods. He finally plates them, with salt and a slice of lemon.

Bingo still decides on the pavlova, of course. Bandit lets her have it, and, as a good loser, offers Bluey a handshake. Then, Chilli informs her that Bandit just called her a booger. Bluey chases Bandit out of the room, while Chilli sits down with Bingo while she finishes. After finishing the pavlova, Bingo shows Chilli how she can shoot edamame beans out of the pod. As they go to leave, Bingo turns back and tries an edamame bean. She likes it after all.

Trivia

  • The board game Bandit and Chilli are playing resembles the war board-game Risk, and some of the game pieces are emus. This may be a reference to Australia's Great Emu War.
    • There are four colours of pieces in play, suggesting that Bluey and Bingo may have tried to play but got bored.
    • The usual board for Risk has a world map, though in this version, only the countries of Australia and New Zealand appear.
  • Bluey's pronunciation of "edamame" as "edna-dame" may be a reference to Australian comedian Barry Humphries's alter ego Dame Edna Everage. Dame Edna, known for her outlandish outfits and distinctive cat eye glasses, is used by Humphries to satirise class snobbery and celebrity by treating famous people like regular folks and regular folks like celebrities.
  • In the French Dub Bandit speaks Italian instead of French, unlike in Camping, Bandit does not speak English.
  • In both Cantonese and Mandarin Bandit is shown to be speaking the language 'in a foreign accent'.
  • Bandit is revealed to speak a little French, and Chilli knows enough to translate.
    • In the episode the word "Mecredi" can be seen used by Bandit. Though is often used by the French as 'child-friendly' swear word (similar to how 'flip' is used in English), the episode does not connote that Bandit intends to use the word in such manner.
  • French Translations:
    • "Bonjour" (Hello)
    • "Je suis le chein!" (I am the dog!)
    • "Ou est la discotheque?" (Where is the disco?)
    • "Carte nord! Pavlova!" (North map! Pavlova!)
    • "C'est bon" (That's alright)
    • "C'est combien pavlova!" (How much pavlova is!)
    • "Écoutez!" (Listen!)
    • "Ou est mon passeport?" (Where is my passport?)
    • "Ou la discotheque?" (Where is the disco?)
    • "Je veux la fenêtre!" (I want the window!)
    • "Un champ pour deux poissons!" (A field for two fish!)
    • "Au revoir" (Goodbye)
    • "Mercredi" (Wednesday)
    • "Ouais, ouais, ouais" (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
    • "Aw. Très bon" (Aw. Very good)
    • "Très malade!" (Very sick!)
    • "Mon petit choux à la crème" (My little cream puff)
    • "Je suis désolé" (I am sorry)
    • "C'est super!" (That's great!)
    • "C'est croissant, s'il vous plait! (It's croissant, please!)
    • "Tu es une morve" (You are a snot)
    • "Comment allez-vous?!" (How are you doing?!)
  • Within his French speak, Bandit mentions the Gare du Nord and Saint-Tropez, both of which are French locations.
  • Bluey's line "How very dare you!" was reused from Kids, used again in season 2's Squash.
  • Pavlova is a meringue based dessert originating in Australia or New Zealand usually topped with fruit and whipped cream.
  • When this episode aired on Disney Channel in the US, it was paired with Phones and Rain.
  • On this episode's page of the official website, the character section has Bluey and Bandit in chef's hats, with Bandit wearing an apron and a fake moustache as well.[2]
