"What happened to raisin' a nation of squibs?" ― Janelle[source]
Janelle is a secondary character who appears in Bluey. An energetic and caring Labrador Retriever, she is the neighbour of the Heeler family, the wife of Pat, and the mother of Lucky and Chucky.
Bluey.tv Description[]
Janelle is Pat’s wife and Lucky and Chucky’s mum. She lives next door to the Heelers but, thankfully, doesn’t get swept up in their loud and chaotic games quite as often as Pat does.
Janelle is kind, warm and softly-spoken. However, as an avid supporter of the New South Wales ‘Blues’, she is capable of becoming very loud and boisterous when it comes to following their live games, even if she does have to watch them alone.
Janelle keeps up with the times on most things and is great at planning kids’ birthday parties.[2]
Biography[]
Mother, sports fan - that's Janelle.
The next-door neighbour of the Heeler family, Janelle is Pat’s wife and has two sons.[3] Born in New South Wales, she naturally barracks for the New South Wales Blues, being the only person in her immediate family who supports them as the rest of her family all barrack for the Queensland Maroons. However, she does barrack for the Australia national rugby union team alongside the rest of her family and the Heelers, too.[4]
Janelle was initially mentioned twice by Pat after being ambushed by two different Heeler games.[5][6]
Some time later, Janelle was preparing Chucky's birthday party when Pat suggested his traditional way to play Pass the Parcel. While Janelle initially questioned his decision, she let it pass, with her husband insisting that she was "raisin' a nation of squibs" and that his rules would "blow [everyone's] mind[s]!"
Don't look at me, mate!
However, Pat's rules' (in reality how it's traditionally played) first use, at Chucky's OWN birthday party, immediately went south, with the kids shocked and surprised at the lack of gifts, as they were all used to how the game was played initially (with everyone receiving presents). Heartbroken birthday boy Chucky was comforted by his mum, who told her husband to not look at her when he nervously did so with all the parents glaring at him. Eventually Pat resorted to giving one of Chucky's presents to a girl named Lila, resulting in the young boy letting out a shriek of absolute shock, for THEY'RE HIS PRESENTS!
Guess he isn't raisin' a nation of squibs anymore.
Some time later, Janelle tagged along for another party, where at this point, everyone was warming up to Pat's rules - vindicating him. She complimented her husband at the kids' newfound acceptance. Later once more, she was at the Heeler House for Bingo Heeler's party, teasing Pat about his comment about "raisin' a nation of squibs".[3]
"WHADDYA THINK ABOUT THAT, JANELLE?!"
Janelle disliked that.
As excitement for the Decider built up, the Labradors found themselves torn in twain - Pat, Lucky and Chucky joined Clan Heeler rooting for the Maroons, with Janelle alone back at home base rooting for her home team, the Blues. The Decider was an important part of Aussie footy where Queensland faces off against New South Wales - the very region Janelle originated from. And son Chucky remained indecisive, with Bluey, a Maroon barracker despite being blue ("It's confusing.") helping him find his team.
Janelle is Home Alone no more.
Immediately, the Maroons began to score and gained an initial upper hand against the Blues, leaving Janelle rather BLUE. Until the Blues scored some good runs, launching the Lonely Labrador into celebrations of joy! Seeing Janelle happy, Chucky requested Bluey follow him to the Labrador House to join her watchalong. Janelle welcomed her son to the house with open arms, and seeing Bluey there, welcomes the Maroon fan - despite not being happy at first, but considering Bluey's friendship with her, lets her in - with some popcorn, AND a quick Blues score for good measure! However, hope quickly faded away as the Maroons started to score once more... Chucky pointed out that the other side was dancing again.
A (Labrador) house divided.
As half-time arrived, Pat and Janelle had a little squabble about who had who in the game, while Chucky had found himself within a rock and a hard place - in his words, "whenever Dad's colour is happy, Mum is sad - but whenever Mum's colour is happy, Dad is sad!"
Pain.
As the sides parted once more, Janelle asked Chucky if he would continue to watch the game from both sides, but Lucky snapped, telling her that he can only pick ONE side - for it's not fair. Chucky looked to Pat... then to Janelle, eventually choosing to go purple. The two shared a hug, and Janelle soon found herself alone once more - and not only did she have to face the music that she was alone once more, her pain was soon compounded as her team was crushed by the Maroons. Chucky looked on as she walked away from her living room, the lights off, heart torn to shreds...
Reloaded and reunited through their shared love!
The next day, however, Janelle reunited with her family and the Heelers for the big game between the Aussie national team versus the New Zealand national team - it was everyone barracking for Team Gold against Mackenzie and his parents rooting for Team Black![4]
Appearance[]
Janelle is a slim Labrador Retriever[1] who has light cream fur that darkens from her waist downwards. She shares a similar body build to her eldest son, Lucky. She is shorter than Pat.
She has long, furry ears - a trait she shares with her family as a whole - that end in slightly darker cream-yellow tips, as does the bottom side of her tail. She has a rounded muzzle (a bit similar to Bingo's muzzle, but bigger) and a light brown nose.
Personality[]
Janelle's a kind mum of two who wants the best for her children.[3][4] Befitting her kindly nature, Janelle is receptive to, and likes to engage in, playful banter with her friends and family - particularly her husband Pat.[3] She has a good eye for things kids are interested in, tending to forego tradition to appeal to everyone.[3]
While kindly, Janelle is shown to be a hardcore sports fan; during matches, she gets passionate, loud and rowdy - placing the game up top her relationship with her family in her good-natured banter (given she's the only one in her family who supports the Blues). However, despite this, she retains her familial love and is visibly heartbroken when Chucky departs for the Maroon squad, who would go on to crush the Blues during the State of Origin.[4] She retains her fiery spirit when watching the Gold team against New Zealand.[4]

Trivia[]
Development of Janelle[]
- There was confusion regarding how her name was spelled. The subtitles initially used the name "Shanelle" (like in "Shaun"), but most Bluey media, including the official website, use "Janelle", thus confirming her name as such.
General trivia[]
- She is originally from New South Wales, and as such barracks for their rugby team. However, this leads to lonely watchalongs, as the rest of her family barracks for Queensland's rugby team.
- However, she finds common ground with everyone else barracking for the Gold team.
- Janelle is one of the few characters in the show to have an accent: Anna Daniels, in her Janelle reveal Tweet, comments that the Labrador mum is "very Central Qld sounding".[1]
- While an adult around the same age as her husband, Janelle does not have any grey hairs.
- She and Chucky are so far the only Labradors to have not participated directly in the Heelers' imaginative games.
- She appears in the book Where's Bluey? At Easter, where she is seen visiting the Kindy as Chucky participates in an Easter party.
