Episode

Christmas Swim is the fifty-first episode of Season Two of Bluey.

Synopsis[1]

The Heelers gather for a classic Aussie Christmas, Bluey gets a new teddy and introduces him to the whole family. But the family play too rough with him and now he wants to go home.

It’s Christmas morning and the Heelers are opening presents at Stripe and Trixie’s place. Bluey is thrilled to get a big teddy called Bartlebee, who she introduces to the whole family.

Bartlebee tries to join in the fun in the pool but soon he is soaking wet, licked, bitten by a crocodile and breaks his arm.

Bartlebee says he wants to go home and Bluey tells Frisky all about it on a video call.

Frisky is also new to the Heeler clan and she reassures Bartlebee that the family are really very nice. When the family sits down for lunch Dad proposes a toast to their newest family member, Bartlebee.

Episode Recap

Warning Spoilers!

The Heelers are celebrating Christmas with Nana Chris, Uncle Stripe, Aunt Trixie, Muffin, and Socks. Nana gives Bandit and Stripe matching aprons that read, "World's Best Chef", while Bandit gives Nana a shirt that says, "Hang on. I'll just get my glasses." Chilli gives Bluey a doll that she names "Bartleby".

Bluey introduces Bartleby to Stripe, who is cooking, and then jumps into the pool and splashes Bartleby. Then, Bluey shows Bartleby to Socks, who licks him, and Muffin, who is playing at being late for work. She then shows him to Bingo, who is riding on a floaty, but then Bingo takes him, starting a tug-of-war between her and Stripe, with Muffin playing on Stripe's back and they pull his shirt off. Then, Bluey shows Bartleby to Bandit, who lands on him him in a game of catch in the pool.

Bluey goes inside the house to where Nana and Trixie are cooking, and asks to borrow a towel. While Nana dries Bartleby, Bluey says that Bandit broke Bartleby's "arm". Then, Rad and Frisky make a video call, during which Bluey complains about her relatives roughing her doll up. However, Frisky says to give the relatives another chance.

So, Bluey does, and things improve -- Bingo bandages Bartleby's "broken" arm, Trixie pretends to let him taste her gravy, the others play with him, and the family has Christmas dinner together.

Trivia

  • As Australia is located in the southern hemisphere (or south of the equator), December is part of Summer, hence the swimming and barbecues which are an adherent part of Aussie culture during the holiday season, compared to the northern hemisphere, where December is part of winter and the holiday season is associated with snow and hot cocoa.
  • This is the second Christmas episode of Bluey, after Verandah Santa.
  • This is the first episode where Socks walks upright.
    • Canonically, she first walks upright in the short Honk.
  • Some of the characters may have aged up.
  • This episode takes place in Stripe's house.
    • The kitchen has been entirely remodeled since it was last shown in The Pool.
  • Frisky and Rad are at the same tropical resort the Heelers visited in Swim School.
  • Notably, Frisky is seen wearing a red flower (specifically a hibiscus) on the left side of her head while she and Rad are on the tropical resort. According to Hawaiian tradition, placing a flower behind the left ear signifies being in a relationship while a flower behind the right ear is a signal that the wearer is single and romantically available.
  • When Chris Heeler is drying Bartlebee, first she calls him "Bartleboy", then "Bumblebee".
  • With their American release dates occurring only ten and one day after their Australian premieres respectively, this and Easter are the quickest episodes to debut on Disney platforms.
  • This is one of five episodes not airing in active rotation on the Disney Junior Channel. The others are Dad Baby, Verandah Santa, Easter, and Family Meeting.
    • This is mainly due to it being a Christmas episode.
  • At the end credits, Bluey's dancing is replaced by the palm tree floatie, floating across the screen.
  • Long Dog: This long dog is yellow-brown and wearing a Christmas hat. When Bluey enters the kitchen, it can be seen on the counter, partly hidden behind the microwave on the right.
  • On this episode's page on the official website, the character section has Bluey in a paper crown holding Bartlebee who is also wearing one, Bingo and the parents in Santa hats, Muffin and Socks unwrapping presents, Stripe wearing his "world's best chef" apron, Trixie in a paper crown holding a prawn, and Chris wearing her "Hang on I'll just get my glasses" shirt.
