Censorship of Bluey

Spoiler Alert! This article/section may reveal details on recent or upcoming episodes, a character who debuted in a recent episode, or other types of Bluey media. Please do not add speculation or fan theories to this page. If you would like to avoid spoilers, you may exit the page, else caution is advised.

Bluey is generally a family-friendly series, with content that suits all ages. However, some episodes may be censored or edited to fit certain companies' standards and practices guidelines. This article is an exhaustive list of censored and edited episodes with detailed reasons for their censorship.

Types of censorship

There can be three different variations of an episode depending on which company receives and modifies it; this is between the original Australian print, managed by ABC and Ludo and available on ABC Iview, Disney/BBC Studios international prints, available on Disney+, and British/BBC prints, available exclusively in the United Kingdom (through either CBeebies or iPlayer).

Australian prints are managed by the Australian Broadcasting Company and Ludo Studio; rarely would they edit them if needed. Once done, Ludo would pass these prints to BBC Studios for international consumption. From these prints would Disney and British prints be created - Disney prints being passed through Disney's S&P, and British prints theirs.

The two pilots, which were both leaked in 2023, were never meant to be released officially, and as such are listed here.

Common reasons for episode edits

Most episodes of Bluey are edited are due to the following reasons:

• Toilet/crude humour: The most common reason for censorship within Disney prints is toilet/crude humour; the first episode to undergo such changes was Markets. Dad Baby, which focuses on pregnancy, is omitted as a whole on Disney services, and a scene in Daddy Putdown involving Bingo asking her Dad how babies are made was cut.
• Regional Differences: Another reason for episodes to be edited is due to differences between different versions of English. This is the reason why BBQ was edited; "capsicum", the original word, is not known within American English as it is Australian and British English. The Decider's usage of the Australian and British English slang "flog" was edited to "beat".
• Imitable sequences: This type of censorship is exclusive to British prints. These are known to have cut out certain sequences imitable by children, like the Penguins game in Fruitbat.
• Viewer complaints: While very rare, episodes have been edited in response to viewer complaints. As such, the master prints will be modified. The two episodes to undergo this are Teasing, Flat Pack (due to the knock-on effect from "Teasing" being censored) and most notably Exercise.

Censored episodes in home media

Very rarely, Australian DVDs of Bluey will have the censored versions of episodes; the Sticky Gecko and Other Stories Vol. 8 release has the Disney version of "Trains". In the United States, the Bluey: Seasons 1 & 2 DVD has the original versions of "BBQ", "Markets", "Chickenrat", "Daddy Putdown", "Trains", and "Army", along with "Dad Baby" all as additional features, the latter episode making its debut in the States.

The US Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray has a mixture of censored and original scenes.

Relaxation of censorship

Very rarely, episodes of Bluey will have their censorship reverted. However, as of 2023, Disney seems to take a much more relaxed stance with censorship. A notable instance of such is Faceytalk, whose edit was reverted on May 2023. Furthermore, the DisneyNOW prints of Explorers, Housework and Born Yesterday were all reverted too. Another notable instance of relaxed censorship was a recent Disney Junior airing of Markets, which restored the pony pooping scene and what happens immediately afterward. As of November 2024, more episodes are being restored to their Australian originals.

Out of all of Season 3b, only two episodes were edited on Disney+ prints - significantly less when compared to earlier releases.

Mistaken instances of censorship and peculiarities

It was thought that a line in Sticky Gecko contained the profane word "dammit." ABC captions the line as "Dammit. Really stuck!" where the international version captions the line as "This thing is really stuck!". Due to the line being muttered while sound effects and music play, the line is indistinct enough, except if the vocal track (e.g. in a 5.1 surronud copy) is isolated, that someone reading the subtitles can hear the profane version of the line. However, when directly compared, the line is identical in all versions: "This thing is really stuck!" is the spoken line; the ABC caption is an error.

Changes to toys

The Doctor Checkup toy features Blueys hat with the red geneva cross, which is known to symbolise what people can do during war and one of the rules is to use the cross for "fair use" or else that the person or company will be violated, which earlier, the cross was covered with a sticker, which is probably as of today, the cross was removed.

This reflects an edit to "Early Baby" that is described below.

	Horsey Ride	Cut sequence/regional difference: In the British version, the scene where Muffin shows Chilli her thongs is removed. In the UK, "thongs" would be understood as an item of underwear, not the footwear in question.	No.
	Bob Bilby	Cut sequence: In the BBC Studios/Disney version, the end credits animation of Buddy picking his nose is cut just before he put his finger in his mouth.	No. This may be an unintentional cut; the Disney version of the credits is always about a second shorter.
	Markets	Cut sequence: In the Disney-distributed versions of the episode, Buttermilk taking a poop then Bluey and Indy running away was cut.	Yes. A recent Disney Junior airing restores this sequence. The US Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray also restores this scene.
	The Pool	Cut sequence/regional difference: In the British version, the scene where Bandit tells Bluey to put her thongs on has been cut. See "Horsey Ride" above. Cut sequence: In the Indonesian version, the scene where Bandit and Chilli kissing has been cut. Imitable Sequence: In the British version, the scene where Bluey talks underwater has also been cut. 	Taxi	Cut sequence: In the US and UK version, the episode ends with Bandit saying "Oh, biscuits" before the screen fades out. In the AU version, the ending continues with Bingo as Millicent pretending to barf on Bandit.	No. However, despite this, in some countries, such as Poland & Indonesian, and on DisneyNOW, Disney+, and the US Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray, the AU version is present.
	Work	Cut sequence: In the Indonesian version, the scene where Bluey ask Bandit to wipe the window & mop the floor with Bandit's bottom & his tongue respectively & the body close up scene where Bandit dancing was cut.	No.
Bluey's hat, with the Red Cross.	Early Baby	International Law: In the original Australian release, Bluey uses a red cross on her hat and sign. In subsequence releases, it was changed to purple. The Geneva Convention grants the exclusive use of that symbol to the Red Cross organisation. As a side-note, the package of the two-pack featuring Bluey and Indy as featured in this episode had the Red Cross blanked out with an external sticker. Peeling it off exposes a Red Cross. Cut sequence: In the Indonesian version, the flashback scene where Chloe was playing Baby Hospital with Bluey & Honey was cut.	No. The US Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray uses this version. It is unknown if Disney+ prints use the original version.
	Chickenrat	Viewer complaints: In all international versions of this episode, the sauerkraut makes Bandit burp. The original AU version portrays him sneezing. The change was made in response to a complaint to ABC that the episode suggested that food allergies can be ignored with little consequence.	No. Despite this, the original version still airs on Disney Junior but the subtitles for it incorrectly use that of the international version.
	Teasing	Viewer complaints: This episode was removed from ABC IVIEW due to a complaint by a viewer stating that the episode included a term with racial connotations and a problematic history for Indigenous Australians ("Ooga Booga"). The episode would be pulled from Disney & CBeebies UK broadcasts but returned on CBeebies airings. Additionally, this episode is unavailable on certain platforms. Despite being available in the American version, this episode was not released on Disney+ in some countries, like Spain.	Yes. The new AU and US versions (as well as the DVD releases) has the insult replaced with the word "Shooby-Doowah", but the US captions still read the insult, "Ooga Booga." For the longest time, this episode was not available on Disney+, and would return to the service with the release of season 3b on July 12, 2023 in place of Smoochy Kiss, which had been available on the service on October 2022.
	The Sleepover	Cut sequences/regional differences: The part where Muffin bites the inflatable guitar causing it to pop and the parts where Bingo says "babe" were cut in the CBeebies airing. The latter edit introduces some discrepancies with some of Bingo's lines.	No.
	Daddy Putdown	Cut sequence: In the Disney-distributed versions of this episode, the part when Bingo asks Bandit "how babies get in their mother's belly" was removed. This is also the reason why Dad Baby is unavailable on Disney services. The CBeebies version of the episode also has this section removed, but the episode still runs for seven minutes, as the ending scene (which shows "Distributed by BBC Studios," runs for eight seconds to the usual two). However, some broadcasters (CBeebies, France 5, TV5, etc.) aired the episode despite being inappropriate for Disney's standards.	On certain platforms. 	Trains	Edit: In this episode, Bluey's line "It's a piece of poo!" was changed to "That's a slug!" for the Disney-distributed version. Bandit's subsequent line, "I licked poo!", and his mouth movements were reanimated to accommodate him spitting instead. Unavailable on certain platforms: The episode was skipped from CBeebies and BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom.	No. Although the original version can be found on the US Bluey: Season 2 (under Australian Originals) and the Australian Bluey: Sticky Gecko And Other Stories Vol 8 DVD releases. The US Seasons 1-3 Blu-ray however uses the censored version.
	Army	Edit: In this episode, Jack's line "There's something wrong with me." was changed to "There's something going on with me." for the Disney-distributed version.	No. Although the original version can be found on the US Bluey: Season 2 (under Australian Originals) and the Australian Bluey: Sticky Gecko And Other Stories Vol 8 DVD releases as well as the US Seasons 1-3 Blu-ray release.
	Tickle Crabs	Cut sequence: In the Indonesian Mentari TV version of this episode, the second time title card after Bluey & Bingo begging for Bandit is cut. This removes the fourth-wall break that occurs.	No. This scene is presented as-is in all other versions.
	Escape	Edit: The word "axe" got replaced with "pick".	On certain platforms. However, on DisneyNOW and on Disney+, the edit is not present.
	Flat Pack	Viewer complaints: Similar to Teasing, this episode was pulled from air due to the word "Ooga Booga", when the Heeler sisters pretend to be cavedogs. The re-edited version had them say "Ooh Ooh" instead. Unlike Teasing, however, the re-edited version was utilised on DisneyNOW and Disney+.	No.
	Postman	Cut sequence: In the Indonesian Mentari TV version of this episode, similar to Tickle Crabs. the revised title card after Bluey & Bingo decide to play multi games (postman & the ground is lava) simultaneously is cut. Once more, this removes a fourth-wall break.	No. This scene is presented as-is in all other versions.
	The Quiet Game	Cut sequence: In the Indonesian Mentari TV version of this episode, when chilli said the last word "bananas" in her line "Trixie said to get a Moonlight Unicorn. She collects them. But don't get one she's already got, okay, or she'll go bananas." In Indonesian dub is cut. ("Trixie bilang beli unicorn cahaya bulan dia mengkoleksinya. tapi jangan belikan yang sudah dia punya, oke? Atau dia akan menjadi...") Also the said version, the title card has no dialogue spoken, similar to the original dub of the episode from season 3, Rain.	No. This scene is presented as-is in all other versions.
	Mr Monkeyjocks	Edit: In the Disney-distributed version of this episode, Bandit saying "He's gone crazy" is changed to "He's gone bananas". Chilli referring to Mr Monkeyjocks as "lover boy" is changed to "sweetheart".	No. The US Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray uses the censored line.

	Mini Bluey	Cut sequence: In the Disney-distributed version of this episode, the scene where Bluey tells Bingo she looks crazy and Bingo telling Bluey to follow her is cut. 	Housework	Cut sequence: In the Disney-distributed version of this episode, the scene where Bandit injures his groin and Chilli spins and falls while trying to imitate Bingo's "bee-yoop" walk is cut.	Yes. This has been reverted on Disney TV and DisneyNOW prints. The US Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray also restores this scene.
	Pass the Parcel	Edit: In the Disney-distributed version of this episode, the pile of poo from the pony Buttermilk is removed, similar to "Markets". 	Explorers	Edit: In the Disney-distributed version of this episode, instead of saying he is from France, the French Backpacker says that he and the Argentinean Backpacker are backpackers.	Yes. 	Family Meeting	Was unavailable in circulation. This episode was originally omitted from the Disney Channel and Disney+'s lineup, possibly due to toilet humour.	Yes. The episode was added to Disney+ in the United States.
	Faceytalk	Edit: In the Disney-distributed version of this episode, when Muffin runs by Trixie on the toilet, the shot is zoomed in to cut Trixie out of the frame.	Yes. This edit was silently reverted in May 2023.

	Puppets	Edit: For the dubs in circulation on Disney+, CBeebies/BBC iPlayer and TVNZ2/+, when offering to let Chilli taste his sauce stain, Unicorse's line is changed from "Care for a lick?" to "Do you wanna bit?" 	Smoochy Kiss	Was unavailable in circulation. Much like Family Meeting, this episode was originally omitted from the Disney Channel and Disney+'s lineup.	Yes. The episode was added to Disney+ in the United States, ironically making it the newest episode on the platform when added.
	The Decider	Regional edit: The Disney+ version of the episode changes the word "flog" to "beat". This is peculiar as "Obstacle Course" does not have such an edit.	No. The US Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray features the original sequence.
	Exercise	Viewer complaints: The original Australian version has the scenes of Bandit and Chilli being disappointed with their weight, which sparked a controversy that made headlines. As a result, the entire scene was cut, reducing the runtime to 6 minutes instead of 7 minutes, making this the shortest episode.	No. The original cut is shown on Disney+ Hotstar, and avaiable on the Bluey: Season 3 DVD and the US Seasons 1-3 Blu-ray.
	Relax	Regional Edit: On Disney+ and BBC iPlayer, Bandit calls the kids "super troopers" instead of "dingleberries".	No. However, the US Bluey: Season 3 and the US Seasons 1-3 Blu-ray contain the original version.
