The manual of style serves as a reference to help maintain uniformity of all articles in the Bluey Wiki. Please keep in mind that these serve as guidelines and not rules. Though these guidelines are enforced across the wiki, certain exceptions to these can apply when necessary. The manual of style is ultimately dictated by the community, and as such, this manual is subject to change at any time.
Before editing, please make sure to read the wiki's Rules!
General
Language
For the purpose of maintaining consistency, and because the subject of this wiki originates from Australia, words on this wiki should conform to the spelling and grammar used in Australian English. Therefore, "color" should be spelled as "colour," dates should be written in day/month/year order, and punctuation should go inside quotations. If you come across an article written in another regional spelling, please change it to the Australian spelling. Australian English rules apply site wide, though leniency is given for talk and user pages.
The articles on this wiki are formal writing, and thus:
- Write out numerals below 101 (ninety-eight, ninety-nine, one hundred, 101, 102, etc.)
- Avoid personal pronouns. Do not use "I" or "you" unless the article demands it.
- Do not use abbreviations. Dr. should be written out as Doctor, TV as television.
This does not apply to quotes or transcripts. In these cases you should write whatever is said word-for-word.
Articles
Avoid making articles which duplicate pre-existing articles (as an example, don't create the page Muffin Cupcake Heeler, as Muffin Heeler already exists). Please make sure the article name for a subject is its official name. For character names, use the character's first name, and last name if known. If their first name is not known, use the name given in the credits. (We know Chilli's last name, so the page is "Chilli Heeler" instead of "Mum" or "Chilli". Chloe's dad's first name is known, but not his last name, so his page is "Frank". Dougie's Mum has no known name, so she would be listed as "Dougie's Mum").
If there are alternative names for pages, then these should be listed as well. As an example: Spygame (also known as Spy Game) is the thirteenth episode of The First Season of Bluey.
Articles must be written to an acceptable proficiency:
- No slang, bar direct quotes.
- Punctuation and grammar used correctly:
- Capitalisation of the first letter and section headers.
- Full stops are to be used to end every sentence, and correct usage for commas and semicolons.
- Quotation marks used on correct sides of other punctuation.
- Correct spellings (Australian English style, which is similar to British English).
POV
All pages (bar user pages) are to be written in the third person (as in, don't write the character page as if the writer is the character in question, or the episode as if you were involved). Episode pages and any sections relating to history should also be written in the past tense:
- Not long after the events of Baby Race, Chilli gave birth to Bingo.
- Bandit and Bingo walked down the hill from their home towards the park, passing a bus stop where Doreen was sat waiting.
Formatting
Character articles should have the following components:
- Quote (optional)
- Basic_Info (template)
- Introductory statement (name in bold, alternate names, minor/major character, first appearance)
- Physical Appearance (age (only put if given), clothing, facial features, stature, etc.)
- Personality (career, accent, demeanor, etc.)
- Character history (small timeline of the character)
- Appearances list
- Trivia (any cultural references, information about other language dubs, etc.)
Episode articles should have the following components:
- Spoiler, Stub, AustraliaExclusive/AusNZ Exclusive
- Infobox-Episode Credits (template)
- Introductory statement (name (in bold), episode number, series)
- Synopsis (copy and paste official synopses Bluey.tv, or ABC TV Guide)
- Episode recap (describe the events of an episode)
- Characters (list characters, see below)
- Trivia (cultural references, continuity notes, information about other language dubs, etc.)
- Errors (link to list of Errors)
Infoboxes and Templates
Templates are small boxes used in articles (mostly to the top) which point out some things to the reader. Inboxes are a type of template; these are rectangular boxes which point out an issue with the article ahead.
At the the very top of an episode page, you may find four infoboxes (in this order):
- Spoiler=This is a warning to the reader that the article to the episode ahead has not yet been widely released. This can be removed only if:
- The episode has been released for a considerable amount of time allowing (at least 18 months), or
- The episode is widely available on platforms outside of Australia and New Zealand (Disney+ is normally the benchmark, if not BBC iPlayer).
- Stub=If a page is missing information (such as an episode recap, a correct load order for characters etc.), then this infobox is to be placed, with a reason to be placed pointing out what is missing, as an example:Missing episode recap, synopsis not linked..
- Censored Content=This is to be shown if an episode has been edited from its original Australian "canon" form in other territories or platforms. This could be for words to be reworded on some platforms (be that due to differing cultural terms or corporate requests, to name a few), or the removal of certain items from a scene (such as horse-droppings being cut on one streaming device), but aren't to be added for episodes which have been cut from a streaming platform. Instances for the inclusion of this infobox are relatively rare on the whole.
- AustraliaExclusiveORAusNZExclusive=These point out that the article for the episode is exclusive to the mentioned nations. Bluey is shown on ABC Kids in Australia (ABC iview as the streaming platform), while on TVNZ2 in New Zealand (TVNZ+). This is to be listed separately to the aforementioned Spoiler infobox.
Additionally, immediately after these you will always find, regardless of episode, these two templates:
- TabEpisode=This is not an infobox, but is a template. This is a small tab to the top of the page, which gives a link to the episode gallery and script. Unfortunately, having this means that editing in Visual Mode does not work correctly, so it is recommended that, if editing, a curly bracket be removed at the start (which makes the aforementioned code look like{TabEpisode}}), though remember to add this in once finished.
- Infobox-Episode Credits=This table at the start of a page shows who worked on the episode. All new articles use this infobox, and all persons who are shown in episode credits (plus others with references), are listed in their correct section.
- Basic Info=This table at the start of a character page shows basic facts about the character. The information in this box should be factual (no guessing) and should only refer to the original English dub. Information specific to other language dubs can be listed in Trivia.
Additionally, some pages may be merged into other articles (A single page for toys rather than one for each individual toy, for instance). If a page is marked for a merge, merge is to be added to the top of the page, which encourages users to discuss the proposed merger of the article in the talk page (this is to be placed before TabEpisode
If a user is editing a section of a page but needs to leave work part-way through for whatever reason, then WIP (which stands for Work In Progress) should be added to the end of the article section, showing that a user is aware that the article is incomplete but aims to complete their work at a later date. If a user notices that the entire page needs updating, be that for outdated information, a lack of said information, or does not fit into the Manual of Style, then the aforementioned Stub is to be added to the correct section at the top of the article.
Linking
Linking is usually limited to the first occurrence of the word or phrase in each article, not counting links inside infoboxes. This is because spamming too many wiki links makes articles difficult to read. Adding multiple links for the same term might be acceptable in very long articles, where linked instances of the term are very far apart. Another exception to this is if multiple links lead to different sections on the same page.
Layout in articles
Character list
Note: All character names must link to their character pages.
Put the characters in the following order: 1. Characters who speak, in the order in which they speak—this includes any noise made with the mouth. 2. Characters who appear on screen but do not speak, in the order they appear. 3. Characters who are only mentioned in dialogue. 4. Characters who only appear in art or photos.
Then, tag characters. After their name, put the following:
- (does not speak) for characters with no lines, but who interact with the speaking cast or story.
- (cameo) for all other non-speaking characters.
- (mentioned) for characters who are only mentioned in dialogue.
- (pictured) for characters who appear in art or photos. Characters who are both mentioned and pictured should be tagged (mentioned, pictured).
Finally: Bold the main character/s of the episode (Bingo). Move them to the top of the character list. If you feel that one of the main characters was significantly more important than the other, move the more important one to the top.
For examples of this, look at Spygame, Pass the Parcel or TV Shop.
Scripts
See Bluey Wiki:Script Guidelines
Episode scripts are the full run down of what happens in an episode, movements detailed and character interactions noted; where detail is essential. For good examples, use Duck Cake, Pass the Parcel or TV Shop.
End of article
Episodes
At the end of each episode, three categories are shown:
-
-
- (dependent on season)
Categories must be placed alphabetically. After this, Episodes is placed. This is a link which transports users to any episode they wish for. Finally, a link to the sister Spanish Bluey wiki is granted. A list is given here[1], and to link to a page, all that needs to be added to the very end of the page is es:Spanish name of article.
Characters
The same process applies as for episodes: Categories which are relevant are placed first (in alphabetical order). In addition to descriptive categories, characters should be categorized as follows:
| Main Character | Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, and Chilli |
|---|---|
| Secondary Character | Major characters who repeatedly appear, and are often involved in the plot. |
| Minor Character | Characters with no major roles, or a major role in at most one episode. |
| Background Character | A character with no lines at all. For these purposes, any mouth sound, including speaking in unison with a group, counts as speaking and promotes the character to "Minor Character". |
Main and Secondary characters should receive the category. After categories, only the interlanguage link needs to be added.
Galleries
In galleries, there is to always to be two things at the very top of each location:
- TabGallery
-
If the gallery in question is for a mini-gallery (on a character page, compared to an episode gallery page), then these first two steps are not needed. After this ==Screenshots== is placed; this is where screenshots are placed. Screenshots are to be named appropriately (do NOT use a random name for each screenshot, this so that screenshots can be added easily to other articles), and to an acceptable quality. Screenshots should also be labelled if referring to different episodes and characters (both using hyperlinks).
Below this ==Videos== is placed, which videos relating to each episode are placed:
- Do not post illegal rips of full videos from unofficial sources.
- The most accepted source for videos is YouTube, with only official channels accepted, such as:
- Bluey (official channel) (their FaceBook and Twitter sites are also accepted)
- TV corporations (ABC, Disney, BBC etc.)
- TV channels (ABC Kids, Disney Junior etc.)
Videos which are only semi-relevant (such as only having 2.5 minutes of an episode shown), are not to be uploaded. Full episodes from the above sources are fully encouraged, and are to be placed correctly. Since video descriptions are shown automatically, no user-added description is needed.
Below this, ==Animated/Gifs== are to be placed. These clips are five seconds long at most and have no sound, do not confuse this with videos.==International== are placed last, which are for locations of non-English language videos (such as dubs of episode clips). Finally, add and Episode galleries to the end of each gallery page.
Citations
Blueypedia, as the name suggests, is an online encyclopaedia of Bluey knowledge. This means that knowledge is handed from users to others. As such, it is very important that said knowledge is reliable and factual. In order for this to happen, users should use a reference button to cite a source. A reliable source can be from an official agency (Ofcom, TVTonight), a relatively unbiased newspaper/TV channel (BBC, Reuters). Sources with statements that are not backed by facts are not reliable (such as stating a characters' age without reason). The best source to use for Blueypedia is from the show itself. In order to reference a website as a source, copy the web address, then go into the Blueypedia page you wish for and type<ref>, which will then allow you to enter your webpage. If you want to use a page on Blueypedia as a reference (which is often better than using external sources), type <ref> and type in (Episode Name for reference). If there is a claim which has been stated on the website and you feel that it has not been given a reliable source, type cite, which will display a message asking for a citation.
- Dog breeds now require a citation.
- Acceptable sources include Bluey media, bluey.tv, an artist's statement, or a source listing a close relative's breed.
- If you believe you can identify a character's breed based on their appearance, you may list it as a trivia item only if you provide your reasoning. Using Missy's Mum as an example: "The shape of her face and her curled tail suggest she is in the spitz family of dog breeds."
Page Protection
Content Moderators and above can protect and unprotect pages, including ones that do not exist. Protection of a page or image usually means that a regular user cannot modify it.
The majority of pages on this Wikia should remain publicly editable, and not protected. Pages may, however, be temporarily or permanently protected for legal reasons (for example, license texts should not be changed) or in cases of extreme vandalism or edit warring or abusive re-creation.
Reasons
- Protecting highly vandalised pages, such as the Main Page on large wikis.
- Maintaining the integrity of the site's logo and favicon.
- Maintaining the integrity of key copyright and license pages.
- Preventing repeatedly created vandal or spam pages from creation. See Special:Protectedtitles
- Protecting the interface and system messages in the MediaWiki namespace (these are protected automatically)
A temporary protection is used for:
- Enforcing a "cool down" period to stop an "edit war", upon request.
- Protecting a page or image that has been a recent target of persistent vandalism or persistent edits by a banned user.
Usage
All pages and sites on Blueypedia are protected so that only autoconfirmed users may edit, with some locations (such as Manual of Style, Bluey Heeler, and a small number of locations) editable to moderators and above, and only the most important pages (such as the wiki homepage), editable by administrators and bureaucrats only.
Pages can also be cascade protected, this will cause all images, pages, or templates transcluded onto the page to be fully protected, even if the main article is only semi-protected.
Images
Images can be a great tool to help spruce up pages and serve as a visual and technical aide. Images uploaded to the wiki that do not conform to the manual of style may be deleted by a moderator.
When uploading an image, please be descriptive and use a name that makes sense. Names which are not descriptive may be removed.
- Titles such as "Vlcsnap-2020-04-02-18h36m18s677.png" don't help for having files organised in the wiki.
- Take a look at the other uploaded files and how they are named so you can get an idea of how to do it.
- Usually a good practice is to name them by the place/character that is being shown or info about what is depicted in the image.
Examples for naming systems would be Episode_Title-Description_of_Image. As examples:
- The_Weekend-Walking_Leaf_On_Bingo's_Nose.jpg
- Magic_Xylophone-Bum_Bongos.png
Captions are allowed but not required, these too should be descriptive and make sense. It is recommended that you caption every image uploaded to the wiki.
Templates
Templates are important to Blueypedia, and provide better readability on pages. There are numerous types:
- Infoboxes=The type you will find at the start of a page, these can list if the page has spoilers, is a stub (incomplete), is exclusive to territories, and numerous others.
- Infoboxes=These list information about events, characters, people and many other things.
Further Assistance
If you ever need any help in regards to any Blueypedia matter, the easiest way to reach out will be on the Bluey Community Discord Server, someone will always be available to help out with any queries. Alternatively, you can contact a moderator or above directly by going to their user profile, then message wall and type a request. Note that while this is the easier option, results may be less instant. We ask that minor issues (such as spelling, false referencing etc.) not be brought forward to a moderator, and the user edit this themselves if able.
